Yoon Suk Yeol, a former prosecutor with no prior elected office, won South Korea's presidency in 2022 in one of its closest-ever elections. On 3 December 2024 he declared martial law, ordering troops to block lawmakers from the National Assembly and the arrest of judges and rivals; the National Assembly voted down the order hours later. Impeached by parliament on 14 December 2024, arrested on 15 January 2025 as the first sitting South Korean president to be detained, and formally removed when the Constitutional Court unanimously upheld his impeachment on 4 April 2025, Yoon was subsequently convicted of leading an insurrection and sentenced to life in prison on 19 February 2026.
