Babur Founds the Mughal Empire

Babur, a descendant of both Timur and Genghis Khan, had already lost Samarkand multiple times before turning his ambitions south to India. At Panipat in April 1526, his army of 12,000 with artillery defeats Ibrahim Lodi's force estimated at 100,000. Babur's use of field artillery and flanking tactics proves decisive. He captures Delhi and Agra, laying the foundation for an empire that would eventually rule most of the Indian subcontinent for two centuries. His memoirs, the Baburnama, are a masterpiece of Chaghatai Turkish literature.
