Central American Independence

On 15 September 1821 the Captaincy General of Guatemala (comprising modern Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica) declared independence from Spain, initially annexing to Iturbide's Mexican Empire before establishing the Federal Republic of Central America in 1823. Independence in Central America was largely achieved by Creole elites without significant military conflict, reflecting the region's peripheral position within the Spanish colonial system and its distance from the main centres of royalist power in Mexico City and Lima.
