Da Gama Appointed Viceroy of India
Sent out in 1524 to reform an Estado da Índia riddled with private profiteering, da Gama died at Cochin in December of the same year, having barely begun. The problem outlasted him: the empire's officials were paid too little to resist the trade they were policing.
