King Philip's War in New England

King Philip's War (1675–1676) was the most devastating armed conflict per capita in American history, fought between English colonists and a coalition of indigenous nations led by Metacom (called 'King Philip' by the English), sachem of the Wampanoag. The war devastated both sides: twelve English towns were destroyed, and up to 600 colonists killed, while Metacom's coalition suffered even greater losses. Metacom's defeat and death in August 1676 effectively ended organised indigenous resistance in southern New England and opened the way for unimpeded English colonial expansion. The war also produced important literature, including captivity narratives.
