Lewis and Clark Expedition

Commissioned by President Jefferson to explore the newly acquired Louisiana Territory, Lewis and Clark led the Corps of Discovery from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean between 1804 and 1806. They mapped the Missouri and Columbia Rivers, documented hundreds of plant and animal species, and established diplomatic relations with dozens of Native tribes. Their journals provided the first detailed geographic knowledge of the American West and set the template for subsequent settlement.
