Mozambican War of Independence
In September 1964 the Frente de Libertacao de Mocambique (FRELIMO), led initially by Eduardo Mondlane, opened a guerrilla war against Portuguese colonial rule from bases in newly independent Tanzania. The conflict steadily expanded across the north and centre of the territory. Along with the wars in Angola and Guinea-Bissau, it formed part of the colonial burden that bankrupted the Estado Novo and demoralised the Portuguese officer corps. Independence was achieved in June 1975, a direct consequence of the Carnation Revolution in Lisbon. Structurally this is a decolonisation independence event linking the Portuguese metropolitan polity to anti-colonial pressure from its periphery.
