Pueblo Revolt — Indigenous Uprising in New Mexico
On 10 August 1680 the Pueblo people of New Mexico, coordinated by a Tewa religious leader named Popé, rose simultaneously against Spanish colonial rule, killing over 400 colonists and missionaries and driving the survivors south to El Paso del Norte. The revolt was the most successful indigenous uprising in North American colonial history and demonstrated that colonial domination could be militarily reversed. Spain reconquered New Mexico in 1692 under Governor Otermín's successor, Diego de Vargas, but the reconquest incorporated significant concessions: the mita forced labour was effectively abolished, and Pueblo religious practices were tolerated.
