Sheikh Hasina Ousted in Bangladesh
The protests began in July 2024 over the reinstatement of a controversial quota system reserving government jobs for descendants of 1971 independence-war veterans, widely seen as benefiting Hasina's Awami League loyalists. A violent police crackdown that killed hundreds of protesters transformed the quota dispute into a mass movement demanding Hasina's resignation. As the army withdrew its support, Hasina resigned and was flown to India on 5 August 2024, ending the Awami League's rule; Yunus, long an adversary of Hasina's government, was asked by student leaders to lead the subsequent interim administration.
