Tiananmen Square Massacre

In spring 1989, students gather in Beijing's Tiananmen Square to mourn reformist leader Hu Yaobang and demand political reforms. The movement grows to hundreds of thousands across China. On the night of June 3–4, the government imposes martial law and sends the People's Liberation Army with tanks into Beijing. The death toll remains unknown due to censorship; estimates range from several hundred to several thousand. The iconic 'Tank Man' photograph, a single protester blocking a column of tanks, becomes one of the 20th century's most recognized images. The crackdown marks China's definitive choice of economic liberalization without political reform.
