Vespucci's First Voyage
Sailing under Spanish commission with Alonso de Ojeda, Vespucci coasted from the Amazon mouth to the Gulf of Venezuela. The sheer outflow of the Amazon and Orinoco convinced him that a landmass of continental size lay behind them — the inference, rather than any landfall, is what eventually put his name on two continents.
