Vespucci's Second Voyage — the New World Argued
Under Portuguese commission Vespucci ran the Brazilian coast a long way south — far past anything Ptolemy's Asia allowed for. His published letters stated plainly that this was a fourth part of the world unknown to the ancients. Columbus died insisting he had reached Asia; Vespucci said otherwise in print, and the mapmakers followed him.
