Argentine Independence

The Congress of Tucumán formally declared the independence of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata on 9 July 1816, creating what would become Argentina. The Buenos Aires junta had effectively governed autonomously since 1810, and José de San Martín was then training his Army of the Andes at Mendoza for the audacious crossing that would liberate Chile and eventually Peru. Argentina's independence was achieved with relatively little bloodshed on its own territory, though the political settlement—between federalists and centralists—remained contested for decades.
