Assassination of Yitzhak Rabin
On November 4, 1995, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was shot at a Tel Aviv peace rally by Yigal Amir, a right-wing Jewish extremist who opposed the Oslo peace process. Rabin died in surgery. His assassination devastated the Israeli peace camp and contributed to the election victory of Benjamin Netanyahu three months later. It remains a defining trauma of Israeli politics and is widely seen as a turning point that halted momentum toward a two-state solution.
