Brexit: UK Votes to Leave EU

On June 23, 2016, the United Kingdom voted 51.9% to 48.1% to leave the European Union — a result that shocked markets, split the country, and triggered the resignation of Prime Minister David Cameron. After three years of political paralysis and two failed deals under Theresa May, Boris Johnson renegotiated a withdrawal agreement that passed in January 2020. The UK formally left the EU on January 31, 2020. Brexit redrew the UK's trade relationships, fueled Scottish independence sentiment, and complicated the Irish border.
