Cisplatine War
On 25 August 1825 exiled patriots of the Banda Oriental (the future Uruguay), the "Treinta y Tres Orientales" led by Juan Antonio Lavalleja, landed from Argentina and declared the province's independence from Brazil, which had annexed it as the Cisplatine Province in 1821. The United Provinces of the Rio de la Plata (Argentina) accepted the province's request to rejoin it, and Brazil declared war on Argentina in December 1825. The land war centred on the decisive Battle of Ituzaingo (20 February 1827), an Argentine and Uruguayan-insurgent victory, while the naval war was fought inconclusively across the Rio de la Plata and the South Atlantic, including the Battle of Juncal (1827).
