George Floyd Killing and BLM Protests

On May 25, 2020, George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, died in Minneapolis after police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for over nine minutes during an arrest. His death, filmed and shared globally, sparked the largest protest movement in U.S. history: demonstrations in all 50 states and over 60 countries. The Black Lives Matter movement's call to "defund the police" entered mainstream debate. Chauvin was convicted of murder in 2021. The protests accelerated a national reckoning with systemic racism and police reform, though legislative change remained limited.
