Gran Colombia-Peru War
The first international war fought by the newly independent Peru broke out in mid-1828 between Gran Colombia, led by Simon Bolivar, and Peru, under President Jose de la Mar, over unresolved border disputes in the Jaen and Maynas regions and over Peruvian support for factions resisting Bolivarian influence in Bolivia. Gran Colombia declared war in June 1828 and Peru mobilised in response on 3 July 1828; a Peruvian naval blockade of Guayaquil was followed by a Peruvian land invasion of southern Gran Colombia. The decisive engagement came at the Battle of Tarqui (27 February 1829), where Gran Colombian forces under Antonio Jose de Sucre routed a larger Peruvian army commanded by General Agustin Gamarra.
