Peruvian Independence Proclaimed

San Martín's Army of the Andes landed on the Peruvian coast in September 1820 and entered Lima in July 1821 as the royalist army retreated to the highlands. On 28 July 1821 San Martín formally proclaimed Peruvian independence in the Plaza Mayor of Lima. Full independence required years more fighting; the decisive confrontation came at the Battle of Ayacucho in 1824. San Martín's famous meeting with Bolívar at Guayaquil in July 1822 resulted in the former's mysterious withdrawal from the struggle, leaving Bolívar to complete the liberation of Peru and Bolivia.
