Stilicho Defends the Western Empire

On the death of Theodosius I in 395 CE, the empire was permanently divided between his sons Arcadius (East) and Honorius (West). Stilicho became guardian of the young Honorius and effective ruler of the West. He was of Vandal descent on his father's side. His chief antagonist was Alaric, leader of the Visigoths. Stilicho crossed into Greece twice to confront him but each time negotiations prevented a decisive conclusion. Alaric was eventually given the command of Illyricum, a remarkable outcome where the raider became a Roman officer. In 408 CE, amid rumors of dealing with the enemy, Honorius had Stilicho arrested and executed. His Germanic troops deserted to Alaric. Two years later, Alaric sacked Rome.
