Arab Spring: Egypt
Inspired by Tunisia, mass protests erupted in Egypt's Tahrir Square on January 25, 2011, demanding the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak, in power for 30 years. Eighteen days of protests culminated in Mubarak's resignation on February 11. Elections brought the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohamed Morsi to power in 2012; he was ousted in a military coup by General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in 2013, who established a government more repressive than Mubarak's, ending Egypt's brief democratic opening.
