Arab Spring: Tunisia

The Tunisian Revolution began on December 17, 2010 when Mohamed Bouazizi, a street vendor humiliated by police, set himself on fire. Protests swept the country and forced President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali to flee after 23 years in power on January 14, 2011. Tunisia was the only Arab Spring country to achieve a lasting democratic transition — winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2015 for its National Dialogue Quartet — before sliding back toward authoritarianism in 2021 under President Kais Saied.
