Dissolution of Gran Colombia
Gran Colombia, the republic uniting Venezuela, New Granada (Colombia and Panama) and Ecuador that Simon Bolivar had proclaimed in 1819, disintegrated between 1829 and 1831 under the strain of regional rivalries, resentment of Bolivar's increasingly dictatorial rule, and the ambitions of regional strongmen. Venezuela, led by Jose Antonio Paez, seceded in November 1829, and Ecuador followed under Juan Jose Flores in May 1830, leaving New Granada as the residual state. A broken and tubercular Bolivar resigned the presidency on 27 April 1830 and died at Santa Marta on 17 December 1830, months before the formal dissolution was completed, reportedly lamenting that those who had served the revolution had "ploughed the sea."
