Euromaidan Protests in Ukraine
In November 2013, Ukrainian President Yanukovych abruptly abandoned an association agreement with the EU under Russian pressure, triggering mass protests on Kyiv's Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square). After security forces killed protesters in February 2014, Yanukovych fled to Russia. The new government signed the EU association deal. Russia responded by annexing Crimea and supporting separatists in the Donbas. The Maidan Revolution set Ukraine on a pro-Western path and began the chain of events leading to Russia's 2022 invasion.
