Osama bin Laden Killed

On May 2, 2011, U.S. Navy SEALs killed Osama bin Laden in a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan — 300 meters from Pakistan's military academy. The raid, code-named Operation Neptune Spear, was approved by President Obama and conducted without informing Pakistan. Bin Laden's body was buried at sea. The killing achieved a core U.S. objective of the post-9/11 era but did not end Al-Qaeda or the broader jihadist movement. Pakistan's apparent ignorance of bin Laden's presence — or complicity — remained a major point of contention.
