Paris Climate Agreement

Adopted on December 12, 2015 at COP21 in Paris, the Paris Agreement committed 196 parties to limiting global average temperature increase to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, with efforts to limit it to 1.5°C. Countries submitted nationally determined contributions (NDCs) — voluntary emissions targets. The US ratified the agreement, withdrew under Trump (2017), and rejoined under Biden (2021). The Paris Agreement replaced the Kyoto Protocol and represented the broadest international climate commitment in history, though critics argue the pledges are insufficient.
