Bolívar Liberates Gran Colombia — Battle of Boyacá

On 7 August 1819 Simón Bolívar's patriot army, having crossed the flooded Andes from Venezuela in a celebrated feat of military audacity, defeated the royalist forces at the Battle of Boyacá in New Granada. Three days later Bolívar entered Bogotá, effectively liberating the future Colombia. In December 1819 the Congress of Angostura proclaimed the Republic of Gran Colombia, uniting Venezuela, New Granada, and Ecuador under Bolívar as president. The Battle of Boyacá is considered the decisive engagement in the liberation of northern South America.
