North Korea First Nuclear Test
On October 9, 2006, North Korea conducted its first nuclear test — a relatively small yield of approximately 1 kiloton. The UN Security Council unanimously passed sanctions (Resolution 1718). Despite international pressure, North Korea conducted further tests in 2009, 2013, 2016 (twice), and 2017, progressively increasing yields to thermonuclear levels. The tests made North Korea effectively a nuclear weapon state, fundamentally altering the security calculus of the Korean Peninsula, Japan, and the United States.
