Paraguayan War (War of the Triple Alliance)
Fought from 1864 to 1870, the Paraguayan War (called the War of the Triple Alliance by the allies) pitted Paraguay, under President-Marshal Francisco Solano Lopez, against the allied forces of Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay, whose May 1865 Treaty of the Triple Alliance formalised their coalition after Paraguay invaded Brazil's Mato Grosso and Argentina's Corrientes province following Argentina's refusal to grant Paraguayan forces passage to attack Brazilian troops in Uruguay. Despite early Paraguayan offensives, the allies' superior manpower, naval dominance of the Parana and Paraguay rivers, and industrial resources gradually reversed the war after Paraguay's defeat at the Battle of Tuyuti (May 1866), and allied forces occupied Asuncion in January 1869. Lopez refused to surrender, retreating with a dwindling army and civilian following into the interior until Brazilian cavalry killed him at Cerro Cora on 1 March 1870, ending the war.
