2026 Lebanon War
Following the US-Israeli strikes on Iran on 28 February 2026 and the assassination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on 1 March, Hezbollah's newly installed Secretary-General Naim Qassem — who had succeeded the assassinated Hassan Nasrallah in October 2024 — vowed retaliation and ordered projectile fire into northern Israel, reopening a front that had been quiet since the November 2024 ceasefire. Israel responded with an intensifying air campaign against Hezbollah positions and, on 16-17 March 2026, launched a full ground invasion of southern Lebanon with two IDF divisions, Defence Minister Israel Katz stating operations would continue until the group no longer threatened northern Israeli communities. Despite its severely degraded command structure, communications network, and missile arsenal following the 2024 war, Hezbollah sustained resistance for weeks, and the fighting proved far costlier in human terms than the group's diminished military capacity might have suggested: Lebanon's Health Ministry recorded more than 4,200 people killed and over 12,000 wounded by mid-2026, with upwards of 1.2 million Lebanese displaced — a toll exceeding the 2006 war's roughly 1,200 Lebanese deaths. A de facto ceasefire took hold on 16 April 2026, though Israeli forces remained in a southern Lebanese buffer zone, with officials stating they would stay as long as Hezbollah retained its weapons, and the truce required repeated extensions amid continued strikes. The conflict's political resolution proved similarly incomplete: after five rounds of US-mediated talks, a framework agreement was signed in Washington on 26 June 2026, which Secretary of State Marco Rubio called "the beginning of the beginning" and which Prime Minister Netanyahu described as "historic" and "a massive blow to Iran and Hezbollah," but which Hezbollah's leadership publicly denounced as "humiliating" and "a surrender of sovereignty" on 27 June — and Israeli strikes on Lebanon continued within days of the deal's signing, testing its durability into July 2026.
