2026 Israel-US-Iran War

The war broke out even as Iran and the United States were negotiating a nuclear agreement, giving the strikes' timing particular controversy. Iran's supreme leadership was thrown into a succession crisis by Khamenei's assassination: an interim leadership council (including President Masoud Pezeshkian and Chief Justice Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei) briefly held authority while the Assembly of Experts, under IRGC pressure to move quickly, elected Khamenei's son Mojtaba as the new Supreme Leader on March 8, 2026 -- Israel had reportedly threatened to kill any successor. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly a fifth of global oil supply transits, produced worldwide fuel-price shocks. Thousands were killed across Iran, Lebanon, Israel, and the Gulf states, and millions were displaced, before the April ceasefire and the June memorandum of understanding.
