Iran Mahsa Amini Protests

On September 13, 2022, Mahsa (Zhina) Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian woman, died in Tehran police custody after being detained by the morality police for allegedly wearing her hijab "improperly." Her death ignited nationwide protests across all of Iran's provinces under the slogan "Woman, Life, Freedom" — the most serious challenge to the Islamic Republic since its 1979 founding. Security forces killed over 500 protesters and arrested thousands. The regime suppressed the uprising by late 2022, but the protests demonstrated the depth of popular discontent.
