Iran Nuclear Crisis Escalates
Iran's resumption of uranium enrichment in 2005-2006, after a period of suspension, triggered an international crisis. The UN Security Council passed resolutions demanding Iran halt enrichment; Iran refused, insisting on its right to peaceful nuclear power. The EU3+3 (UK, France, Germany + US, Russia, China) offered incentives to suspend; Iran rejected them. The standoff established the pattern of sanctions escalation and intermittent diplomacy that dominated Iran policy for the next decade, until the 2015 JCPOA temporarily resolved it.
