Iran Attacks Israel Directly

In the wake of the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack and Israel's Gaza campaign, Iran and Israel engaged in their first direct military exchanges. On April 1, 2024, Israel struck the Iranian consulate in Damascus, killing senior IRGC commanders. Iran retaliated on April 13-14 with an unprecedented direct attack on Israeli territory using over 300 drones and missiles — mostly intercepted by Israel, the US, UK, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. Israel struck back on April 19. The exchanges marked a dangerous shift from proxy confrontation to direct state-on-state warfare between the two longtime adversaries.
