War of the Confederation
In 1836 Bolivian President Andres de Santa Cruz united Bolivia with a fractured Peru into the Peru-Bolivian Confederation, a state Chile's government viewed as an existential threat to its own commercial and strategic position on the Pacific coast. Chile, joined by Peruvian exiles opposed to Santa Cruz and later by Argentina, declared war in 1836 and, after an initial expedition failed, mounted a second invasion under General Manuel Bulnes. The Confederation was defeated at the Battle of Yungay on 20 January 1839, after Bulnes's earlier victory at Buin, and Santa Cruz fled into exile, ending the Confederation and restoring separate Peruvian and Bolivian states.
