Israel-Gaza War
On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched a surprise attack from Gaza into southern Israel, killing approximately 1,200 people — mostly civilians — and taking 250 hostages. Israel declared war and launched a major military campaign in Gaza aimed at destroying Hamas, producing a humanitarian catastrophe over two years of fighting. The conflict triggered a broader regional escalation involving Hezbollah in Lebanon, Houthi attacks on Red Sea shipping, and Iranian-Israeli direct exchanges. Under the second Trump administration, a twenty-point peace plan produced a ceasefire (effective October 10, 2025) built around a phased hostage-for-prisoner exchange, an international stabilisation force, and eventual Gaza governance and reconstruction; by mid-2026 phase one had concluded with the return of all hostage remains, but phase two — Hamas disarmament and a political roadmap for Gaza — remained unresolved amid continued Israeli strikes and disputed ceasefire violations on both sides. The conflict sharpened international divisions on Palestinian statehood and intensified anti-Israel and antisemitic incidents globally.
